I am about to collect my new Rottweiler puppy and was just after some advice on toilet training. I am not sure if i should paper train first or go straight into outdoor training, my only concern with outdoor training is i though pups cant go outside untill a later date

well we would all llike to get a puppy to go outside straight off and if you have an enclosed garden where no other dogs can come in then there is no reason your puppy cant go outside straight away.
I would however personally put paper by the door at night and confine pup to a small area to limit the damage, unless of course you are planning to use a crate in which case leave one end for paper and one end for bed.

I dont intend to use a crate just a small utility room with a child gate, i really want to make this a success so just want any tip at all

a utility room is perfect, i would give the puppy something that smells of you to help it settle, then put some paper down nearest the exit door, dont worry you will get the odd accident but pups will naturaly go away from their sleep area.
When you take it in the garden be patient, stay with it till it performs then give it tons of praise and a treat, i kept a sweetie jar by the door for mine and they go out and wee just for a dog sweetie.
It shouldnt take long.

Hi I've had my pup now for 9 days (he's just over 9 weeks) and he's doing great with toilet training. I take him out everytime he wakes up even if he's only had a twenty minute sleep. I also feed him outside (cos the weather has been great!) and he goes within 5 minutes of finishing his food. I'm using a crate - just for his bed- and I tried putting paper in one end and closed the door, well he just whined and whined cos he wouldn't use the paper. As soon as I let him out he went outside and happily went back in his crate. So now I don't close the door at all and just take him out straight away after waking. He does use paper at night (next to the crate) which is fine. I don't have paper down during the day at all. I've had 4 'accidental wees' in 9 days all of them my fault not being quick enough! But he hasn't pooped once in the house  :D for the last couple of days he's taken himself outside when he's woken which is amazing!!  :D
