Title: walking on a lead
Post by: busdennis on January 01, 2007, 10:04: PM
just got a 16 month old ESS, fantastic dog, good with the kids our old dog and the cat, comes when called and clean in the house but he has never been walked on a lead which we where told about from the rescue.
I have trained 2 dogs before (boxer and ridgeback) which was quite easy as they where great dogs but this spaniel is proving harder

he just pulls for england, doesnt listen to any command and i cant get is attention at all when walking and gets too excited to take any treats when doing well. We have tried the changing direction quickley approach but this is soon forgotten

is it a ESS thing?
his age?
the walking has been done with a normal lead and choker. Does anybody recommend an easy leader or none pulling dog harness or just a shorter training lead?

thanks for any help

Personally I use a rope lead. You have a breed which is a notorious 'puller'. Thought I'd let you know that you are not the only owner of an ESS who has one arm longer than the other. I'm sure someone else will be able to give you some sound advice on how to go about curing the problem.

Canny Collar or Easy Walk Training Harness and yes it is an ESS thing. ;-)

what about a gentle leader or a halti? or a harness. But yes I think its a breed thing..but then I was always told beagles were the same, theres 4 around here and they are better behaved than mine. So persevere. I am sure there is someone on here with the breed who can give good advice.
