Title: sensible dog to live with cats?? Post by: spamchops on February 13, 2007, 10:13: AM Still working on my plan to get a dog, some of the breeds I have been looking at are:
Cavalier King Charles West Highland White Beagle German Shepherd I have cats so don't want any sighthound type dogs, also considered Cocker Spaniel but a friend had one and it had to be destroyed because of an inherited behavioural problem.. :-( - put me off a bit.. Also it would be my first dog, although I have been around other peoples dogs a lot so nothing too difficult! Any ideas? I have no problems with training it as I am used to training horses and know how to be consistent, patient etc and know that you can't be lazy about it. I do like the King Charles but I don't want the cats to bully it! Title: Re: sensible dog to live with cats?? Post by: CazAndrews on February 13, 2007, 11:32: AM I've had Cavaliers and think they are wonderful companions - all the KC's I have known have never had any issues with cats - especially if the cats are there first. If you are confident with training, have you considered a rescue? there are so many dogs in rescue centres dying for a home with someone willing to give them the time they need. And the staff at places like Battersea would match your needs with the perfect dog for you. It might be worth a look. Good luck!

Title: Re: sensible dog to live with cats?? Post by: spamchops on February 13, 2007, 02:21: PM I would quite like a rescue but the local ones website try to offload greyhounds to people with cats!! seems to me that they say the dogs are ok 'cos they want as many ticks in the boxes as possible. I've nothing against greyhounds but am not going to test the theory on my cats and chickens, thats why I would like a pedigree puppy really, because you already have an idea of the traits of the breed and a little pup is less of a shock on the other pets. I would definately get a rescue dog if it weren't for my other animals.. I do like labs too by the way!!!!! The dog I really really wanted was an alaskan malamute but sadly after lots of research I removed them from the list... :(
Title: Re: sensible dog to live with cats?? Post by: smokeybear on February 13, 2007, 03:34: PM If you have never had a dog before then I would consider very carefully the ones on your chosen list.
The CKCS is teh most cat like of dogs and can take as much or as little exercise as you like. They are easy to train for any discipline and their grooming requirements are not arduous. You DO have to make sure that you buy from heart tested breeding stock. They have fabulous temperaments and are long lived. Beagles are noses on legs and so once they have a scent of something, like all hounds, are off........ WHWT have a tendency to a lot of skin problems and they require regular stripping and can tend to be vocal. GSDs are not necessarily suitable for a first time owner and care must be taken re source. Sires should be haemophilia tested and both sire and dam hip and elbow scored and eye tested. If you want a dog that gets on with cats be sure you get a GSD from show stock rather than a high prey drive one from working stock. Alaskan Malamutes again are not a wise choice for a beginner. Best of luck Title: Re: sensible dog to live with cats?? Post by: spamchops on February 13, 2007, 04:00: PM thank you for all the advice. Looks like it's the cavalier then (hurray!)

Title: Re: sensible dog to live with cats?? Post by: SAB on February 28, 2007, 12:10: AM Hi, I'm new to the forum. Another multi-cat household looking for a new canine addition. I've read through the other posts, but please bear with me. You may have some advice and guidance especially for me in my circumstances. I'm 62 years old and retired. I grew up with dogs but never had one throughout my working life, because of the high level of my committments. I've always longed for a dog but, as stated, I have a settled feline household. (3 large males and 1 female - all adult rescue cats), so I feel I must proceed with some caution. I tend to think I should aim for a 'medium-sized' dog. I don't want a small one, but, as I am a tiny Scottish lady - 4ft 9", weighing 5.5st, I don't want a dog bigger than myself! I have a house and garden and exercise will not be a problem.
I have no preference for any particular breed, or for any breed as opposed to a non-breed, I never imagined I would have a puppy, but wonder if this is the way forward in terms of expectatios of size and temperament etc.. Any help and advice would be welcome. I feel my caution is becoming stalemate, and I do want to move forward and realise my dream. Thank you so much. Title: Re: sensible dog to live with cats?? Post by: Canyx on February 28, 2007, 01:41: AM Puppy yes! (get a lab : ) no, I kid!) <<(or maybe not...)
Seeing as you are retired, you have plenty of time to mold a puppy into your lifestyle. Any puppy can get used to cats if they grow up with them at a young age. Good luck! And happy retirement! And I've heard a malamute that adored cats, let them crawl all over her! Title: Re: sensible dog to live with cats?? But they are exceptionally well behaved in all circs like no dogs i have ever met even other bassets!
