Title: Dog limping heavily, no weight being put on one leg.
Post by: JamesMurphy on April 22, 2007, 02:05: AM
I cam home today, and unfortunately, to my shock, my dog Barney came over to me limping, putting no weight on his front right leg, we are taking him to a vet's tomorrow. But I'm worried for him, as I'm not sure how/what he has done. I believe he has jumped off of the bench in our garden, chasing cats, he is 11 years old now so he's getting old.

I'm thinking it could be a pulled/torn muslce or at worst a broken bone, but I think we would know if it was broken. He seems to not be in too much pain, he is eating normally and is still happy, but just in pain and unable to walk.

If it were to be a pulled/torn muscle, what would be the process that the vet would take? I'm very concious of my dog's quality of life, and promised to myself that if his quality of life ever dropped significantly we would consider putting him down, if it was best for him. I don't know much about these things, could anyone clarify any routes of treatment and if he would still be able to maintain a good quality of life?

Thanks in advance.

James.

My dog jumped off the windowsill a few months ago and I was terrified that he had broken his leg but it was just bruised, your vet will probably feel his leg to see if she can feel a break if she can then obviously she will do an x-ray, if she can't feel anything you will probably get some painkillers for him and if he is still limping in a couple of days then you will have to take him back for a x-ray to make sure.

A couple of weeks ago - Finley came home from a walk and was limping - a front leg - next morning it was worse  :o

We went to vet - they kept him in and sedaed him to examine him properly   :'(

It was a dislocated toe !! It was bound and he had painkillers/anti inflams to take. A couple of days and he was fine again.  :)

It's just so hard not to worry........let hope it's just something really simple............good luck and let us know what happens.

Well bad news today...

Vet says it could be one of 3 things. He could of had a stroke, arthritis or just a muscle injury.

But because it was an emergency clinic today, and Barney wasn't in pain (He was running away from the Vet bless him) They wouldn't do anything, parents are bringing him back tomorrow for proper check up, now I'm upset that I won't be able to go with him due to school.

I'm worried, but trying to look on the good side of things.
