How about finding another person who has a dog that you and emma can get together with and have play time.
IMO it may be best to wait until after your move so see what the living situation for you and emma will be before adding another dog.

Laurie  I noticed that you live in Vancouver. Did your vet do a Cryptococcis titer on your dog?  I know the fungus has moved from here on Vancouver Island to the lower mainland.  When my dog contracted it it started with a bloody discharge from the nose.  Might be worth a test for it.  It doesn't show up in regular blood work.  I hope that it isn'tt but if it is the earlier it's caught the greater success there is in treating it.

She probably is still excited to have someone pet her and this is when she looses a little bladder control.  Only time will take care of this.  It is involuntary so the worst thing you can do is scold her for it.

5  The DogChat.co.uk Discussion Forum / General Dog Chat / What healthy treats do you give your dog? on: September 13, 2004, 12:59: PM
I make homemade treats for my dogs.  I use a beef heart.  boil it and cut it into bite size treats.  Dry it in the oven for a while and then freeze them uncovered.  They dry out really nicely and arn;t stinky.

8  The DogChat.co.uk Discussion Forum / Controversial / Vaccinations on: October 08, 2003, 06:29: PM
I started questing the booster thing after one of the best vets in this area told me that giving my 2 year old very healthy GSP a distemper booster was a waste of money.  This was 16 years ago.   As she said it's a puppy desease and healthy adults rarely get it and if they do it's quite mild.
Archie  was inadvertantly exposed to Parvo 2 years ago.  Nothing, not even a runny nose. He was 3 at the time.  3 pups that were exposed died even with having had the vaccination,  but none of the adult dogs were effected.     This was at our local SPCA so a lot of dogs were exposed.  The carrier was a yound adult malnurished St. Bernard.  He was lathargic(sp) but otherwise seemed quite well.  It wasn't until he went into reacue a few days later that is was discovered that he had Parvo.  He made a full recovery but unfortunatly the pups didn't.  And then the fun disinfecting the whole kennel started.  I still can't stand the smell of bleach!

Thanks for posting that Jeff.  A long read but well worth it.

Who believes giving yearly booster shots is necessary.  I'm referring to healthy adult dogs here.
There has been quite a bit of recearch done lately by the vet colleges in the US that some are not even healthy to give yearly and lowers the immune system instead.  Especially the puppy deseases.  Distemper and Parvo are mainly puppy deseases and don't effect healthy adult dogs.  There is strong evidence that the final shot given at 1yr gives protection for at least 7 years and possibly for life in the case of distemper and 5 years for parvo if given with the live vaccine.
Many of the dog events here including dog shows, will now accept a titer test instead of a vaccination certificate.
Your opinions please.
11  The DogChat.co.uk Discussion Forum / Controversial / Greyhound racing, for or against? on: August 30, 2003, 01:52: AM
What is cruel is that the ones that get retired usually get retired with a bullet in the head.  The luck few go to greyhound rescue.  i know that in the US alone the ones that are killed either before they even start to race or after they don't make the winners circle is in the 10 of thousands.  The life they lead in the kennels is not the most (to say the least) pleasant either.   If you go into the greyhound rescue site and go to some of the links you will see some very horriffic pictures.

We were also told to watch the dogs carefully as it can be very mentaly draining for them and they can suffer from burn out.

Good for you Taylor.  Archie has just passed his Therapy Dog test and gotten his official scarf.  We start working next month visiting the extended care units.  We were advised to bring our own treats and watch like a hawk that the patients don't try to feed them an unwanted pill or other inapropiate item.
14  The DogChat.co.uk Discussion Forum / Controversial / Greyhound racing, for or against? on: August 27, 2003, 07:46: PM
Greyhound racing is illegal in Canada except maybe for Quebec so I have never seen it nor is it shown on TV.  We do have lure coursing,  JR races and Dachund races which are televised. But these are races between pet dogs.  No betting allowed and no money prizes.  The winner gets a bag of dogfood or a new coat or other such thing.  The dogs have a great day and seem to enjoy the running, but at the end of the day they go home with their owners to relax on the couch.
The greyhounds may well enjoy the run also and I have no problem with that.  I do have a HUGE problem with the industy itself and what goes on behind closed doors.  IMO it should be banned as is dog fighting.  I don't know if going underground would be a major problem.  I think it would be quite difficult to hide because of the size of track needed, unlike dog fighting which only requires a barn or basement and is easily hidden.

Aarchie is an angel and has never taken a step out of place in the 4 years I have owned him.
Now Sophie on the other hand    She loves to counter surf,  so a clean kitchen is a must.  It has taught me to be a better housekeeper so I quess it isn't all bad.  Any socks or underwear left laying around get taken to the back yard for all the neighbours to see Twisted Evil
