The DogChat.co.uk Discussion Forum / Breed Specific / what type of dog do you own?

We-e-e-e-e-ell, I've clicked on "Pastoral", but it isn't really accurate. Which, of course, is all Lisa's fault, as she didn't include a category for "Shonky Sheepdogs" See what I mean........ You can't really imagine that pair of clowns doing anything useful! They were born on an Orkney farm (in the barn!) and have no paperwork whatsoever. I suppose that the KC would rather call them "working sheepdogs", but I think that's just pure snobbery - my boys are pure-bred Border Collies, of perfectly legitimate (and, IMO, totally authentic) lineage, bred (if that's the word!) in the original way - to be good farm dogs. So there! Kali (almost 10) left, Snorri (6) right. Snorri

a poor defenceless animal that has been shot but not killed, and between the pain and the starvation, they now unbelievable suffering. People who shoot can't guarantee to kill the animal, they may hit it but not kill.
Having been taught military shooting ("Empire Test" marksman level, I still have the badge*), I'd be very tempted to say that anyone who can't take out an animal the size of a fox shouldn't be out with a gun in the first place. One of the essences of being a good shot is knowing when not to fire. (*Probably couldn't do it now, so I don't try) Snorri

GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR!
I've discovered what's wrong with mine, I think. They seem to have discontinued recognition of MSNM for any Mac computer running on anything earlier than OS 9.2.2
I use OS 9.1.0, so there is no longer a working version for me, it appears.
If anyone else is in this position, there's always Yahoo IM and AOL's "AIM", both of which work on Mac and PC. You don't have to be on AOL to use AIM, and it gives access to a lot of the AOL chatrooms, etc., I think one could be created that anyone could use??

Exactly - just goes to prove that the people who wont do drag hunting are only in it for the killing of defenseless animals, therefore a bit wrong in the head IMO, that's a masterpiece of understatement! I could think of a far more descriptive way of putting it, but it would get me thrown off the board We do have a hunt ban in Scotland, but even that has loopholes in it I have seen this hunting argument rage across several boards, and there's always one thing I never understand: Someone puts up a post about a pet dog that has been attacked by another dog, and it's followed by a series of replies saying how awful it must have been, etc., etc. Then, when a hunting thread appears, the same people will, quite happily, condone doing exactly the same thing, deliberately, to an animal which is quite close to a dog. I'm afraid the attitude baffles me. Don't fall for the smokescreens, emotional blackmail and flim-flam of the pro-hunting mob - if they were as keen on "tradition" as they say they are, they would not have cars, computers, televisions or anything else that was invented after 1000 AD - they aren't traditional! Putting little boys up chimneys used to be traditional, too, and we don't accept that any more. Snorri

The only thing I can think of (and you've probably tried it already, to no avail) is to make sure you're logged OUT, exit the site, then delete the cookie for this site only, then come back and log in. Assuming that your browser is set to accept cookies, this ought to solve the problem. However, if I can think of that, I'm sure you can, too, so it's probable that I've been "teaching granny to suck eggs" (oops! no implication of age intended, you're probably young enough to be my grand-daughter ). Failing all that, please ask the genie of the lamp to provide a techie peep! Snorri

The DogChat.co.uk Discussion Forum / General Dog Chat / Do You Take Your Dogs On Holiday?

Yet another "Holiday? What's that?" person! However, I did take early retirement (very early, it was a good deal!) and now live where I used to take holidays! Any time we're off-island, we take the dogs with us. The last time was for a funeral in Bristol (obviously, they didn't come to the service!!) and they weren't frightfully keen, but on the way back, they did get a nice three days at my cousin's home near Aviemore - trees (they don't see many of those, usually!), big garden and lots of rabbits. We do have the occasional weekend on Westray (a different Orkney island), they've always been made welcome and have had a fair bit of fun on the beaches there. The DogChat.co.uk Discussion Forum / New Dog Owners / How do i bring my pup home?

I think it's quite possible that a pup won't be able to hold it that long I think it's PROBABLE that a pup won't be able to hold it that long! If you can't break the journey, you might[/] get some advice from the rail company (very faint chance ). Back in the days of all-British-Rail, they had some pretty good people - but prepare to be told the pup has to go in the guard's van (or whatever they call it now)

Glen was a rescue (in the nick of time) - some unutterable b*****d had thrown him into a river, with a brick tied to his neck. It was in deepest January, too, with blizzard conditions. A neighbour found him with the brick frozen to the bank. In those days, unwanted dogs were shot by the police, after 7 days. My dad heard about him on his seventh day.
You might think that a dog might not be too fond of people after treatment like that, but not Glen. He was the ideal companion for three children - playful, protective and patient. Poor blighter had his tail pulled regularly and even got dressed up in silly clothes, but nobody remembers ever getting nipped or bitten. We would like to think that he thanked us for taking him in by living as long as he did - 18 years was remarkable in those days.
Of the spaniels, the one named Tina was a rescue as well, although not as dramatic - she had been abandoned rather than going through an attempted murder! Sally was the mother of the other two.
