Visit different breeders and don't buy the first puppy you see!!!!!
buy from a breeder that you like! very important if you like the way they are raising the pups and you feel able to ask them any questions about the pup, you will have a better chance of getting good aftersale advice. make sure you have a list of questions before your visit and expect to get the third degree from a good breeder, they will be worried about the home they are sending their baby to.
33  The DogChat.co.uk Discussion Forum / New Dog Owners / how to find a right puppy on: October 11, 2006, 06:23: AM
Theres tons of questions to ask but most of them you will need to ask yourself first: what size dog do i want?
how big is my house?
how long each day will my dog be left alone?
will i be able to offer enough walks and play times?
can i afford a ton of vets bills and insurance?
will i go to training/puppy classes
do i want a puppy or an older dog?
does it have to be pedigree or will a mix suit me?
the list goes on and on.
once you have an idea of what you are able to offer your dog then you need to think about what the needs for each breed are and if they fit your needs. it's no good falling in love with a great dane if you live in a one room flat in the middle of a city and work eight hours (bit over the top but do you see what i mean?) where as if you live in the country and have a massive garden and are at work for just part of the day things differ and you have a different choice of dogs. so much to think about Smile
good luck and don't get brain strain thinking about it just enjoy the fact you may soon have a four legged friend Laughing

Hi Tom
Don't have a problem with the wet feet. they all sit or stand on a large towelling door mat after a walk or wee break and wait there until i either dry them or i tell them t go to a basket. they are really good like that and have learnt this from Molly my eldest dog. she's always been very "clean" and hates having dirty paws. also i use dog bags if they have been swimming. they go in them at the park and by the time i have driven home they are about 80% dry and it keeps them really warm.
36  The DogChat.co.uk Discussion Forum / Dog Behaviour and Training Issues / Is my Westie in Season? on: October 10, 2006, 10:34: PM
It could be that she is coming into season. most bitches only have a season every six months or so but each girl is different. my girls always get very cuddley in the weeks before their seasons and they also start humping my poor stud dog. as they don't smell "good" yet he's totally confused by this attention. Digg always goes on holiday's when the girls come into full season (we don't want any unplanned pregnancies).
without seeing your girl and knowing her past history it really hard to say. she could just be feeling a bit down or showing signs of a season. do you plan to have her spay? if so you would be wise to have it done sooner rather than later. although if a season is on it's way you'll then need to wait a few months. have you be able to contact the breeder to ask the dates of her last season? if she's feeling a bit grumpy let her have some quiet time to her self, make sure your son is aware she needs to be left alone if she's having "time out".
or just a thought  Idea  there's no chance she's pregnant is there :  :

Hi
really pleased to hear pup is ok now. totally agree there are some daft breeders about. and do try soaking the dry diet in warm water, this not only makes it taste nicer but it helps make sure the pup is taking in enough fluids. as pups don't always drink enough.
38  The DogChat.co.uk Discussion Forum / Dog Behaviour and Training Issues / 13 week old mounting.... on: October 10, 2006, 06:26: AM
Hi
at thirteen weeks old i'd disagree that it's a dominance thing and put it down to play and over excitment. i've seen loads of pups do this at this age and younger, best remedy is distraction. if he starts mounting you as he gets older and keeps mounting other dogs then yes it could turn into a way to prove his dominance. but at thirteen weeks?? i doubt it.
what breed is he anyway? not that this should make a difference just interested.
do try and get him neutered before he is mature, not for temperment but for health reasons.
all the best

Hi Tom
what's your trick????? i haven't managed to teach the husband all those jobs let alone the dogs!!!
got to say i can't see the point me trying to stop the dogs going all over the house, because the cats moult more than the dogs do, and they lay where ever they want and enter the house through any open window they find even though theres a perfectly good cat flap that none of them use!!!

Welcome  Very Happy
have you any pic's of your dogs? they sound lovely. my two youngest are like your's. Suki does things in her own time though and she then tells maggie what to do. Maggie follows Suki everywhere and try's to always sleep in the same bed as Suki. they are only three months apart in age and they both look to my eldest girl who they think is Mum.
44  The DogChat.co.uk Discussion Forum / General Dog Chat / Cleaning your house when you have a dog on: October 09, 2006, 03:22: AM
Each to their own... i'm afraid i can't agree to keeping the dog confined to one or two rooms, My dogs are part of the family and thus are allowed in the rooms that i'm in. they have no want to be upstairs if i'm in the kitchen or to be downstairs if i'm having a bath. they follow me about the house and watch my every move. this is how i want it, they are part of my life and to have them locked away just to save me a bit of house work.........well where's the fun in dog ownership?
but as i said the start with each to their own and whatever works for you.

Hi
we have five dogs in the house. with tiled flooring (rugs that can be machine washed) leather sofa so we can wipe of any dirty paw prints. their beds are washed weekly and i hoover daily. i'm afraid that's part of life when you share you home with "four paws" although my cats shead more hair than my dogs Laughing  Laughing
