Hello
I have a ridgeback, she was a rescue dog and ive had to start all over again with her training. She was 18mths old when i get her.
My girl loves fuss & love & cuddles so before a walk i will carry on doing house work etc keep busy and not fuss the dog. Then when i go out as a reward for doing what she is told she gets loads of fuss.
The other thing she does is break her position before she is told, which is prop what your going through. I like to gently praise in the position but if she breaks put her strainght back without asking her to do it again. You may find it takes a while but my girl got it in the end.
Hopes this helps

Just an update to all who answered.
I have been walking them seperatly and they are 2 completely different dogs! Very well behaved, off lead and on. Looking to other dogs to play. Alot better with obedience and coming back to me. I have since taken them on a walk with my partner together both off lead and everything is fine.
I have started to relax, my partner has noticed the difference with them off the lead and is starting to relax. I have taken on board the dog communication and let them get on with it while still watching the situation. I think its not understanding the dog communication of raised hair on back, teath showing etc. That is all that happens now raised hair and lots of bum sniffing! but no teath showing, no aggressiveness! and all off lead YES!!!!!
The GSD love's nothing more then to play, the ridgeback wont go far from the treat bag!
A big thank you to everyone who answered!

HI
I have read your post, i am a Dog walker and i'm employed by people who have to work full time. I go to there house collect their dog and walk it for them. I usually pop in around lunch time to break up the day for the dog and then after an hour or so i pop them back home and settle them down. If you could find something like this in your area you will know and not have to worrie about getting home or your sister to help out.
Hopes this helps

She was really timid when we got her scared of men, would most likely jump through glass to get out of the room if a man was in it. My boyfriend found it really hard as he hadnt done anything its just what was imprinted before hand. She is frightened of the hose, hover, strangers shouting and if my boyfriend has a drink she growls at him with her tail tucked under and a scared look on her face. Its the same with other men if they have had a drink even when they are not in our house. Its taken a long time and dont get me wrong she is not perfect but we are getting there.

Hello i own a ridgeback she is 2,1/2yrs old. I rescued her about 1 yr ago now and have since found out she was beaten by her behaviour. All i can say is dont go down the punishment route as this has clearly affected my dog. I use the Jan Fennel teaching method as at first my girl was not into food so i used praise and love as her reward while out and it has really worked now she is interested in food rewards. It does seem a little strange at first but it really does work. I have enrolled in a obedience class and we are just about to take our Bronze Kennel Club Good Citizens award.

Hello all
I think its the dogs itself not so much the breed, at the moment i own a Rhodesian ridgeback, GSD, Yorkie and Lakeland Cross. My GDS is the most eager to please should we say, she loves working and obedience but i'm not what i would call an experienced owner. My Ridgeback has figured out that all she has to do is all the positions she has learned to get a treat and it does look cute so she gets away with it. And my Yorkie looks at the Lakeland sitting on the sofa, runs outside barking at nothing the lakeland follows and the yorkie runs back to get his seat! But this yorkie i have now is stupid compaired to the last one i had, i taught her to change the tv station. I think all dogs have there own character and no 2 dogs are the same weather it be 2 different dogs or the same breed. If they were we would be pretty bored by now.

Hello
Can someone please help. I have a GSD just over 1yr old passed all Kennel Club good citizen schemes very well behaved, until recently she has started barking at passing dogs whilst on a walk. I also own a Ridgeback and when walking the two of them i am careful when we come across other dogs. Well an owner let his staff walk up and it instantly attacked my Ridgeback i kept hold of both but it was only beacuse she slipped her coller that she escaped with a few scars and teeth marks as she is gentle. I managed to keep hold of my GSD but she was going mad as they are very close. Needless to say the man just walked off didnt say sorry or anything! we wont go their. Since then every time i see a dog i get them on the leads and stay far away as poss but today a lady just let her dog come straight up to mine and as i shouted leave. She screamed at me is their something wrong with your dogs with a real attitude. Speechless i just walked on. I now feel that i cant trust other dog owners and my gsd has picked up this barking while other dogs pass. I need help! is it because of my reaction?
