Hi all, me again

Today tonks is seeming really lazy - I hate to say it but that's the best description!  She's always been a bit unenthusiastic, but I put it down to her being young still.  However yesterday and most noticably today, she seems to be getting worse.

If I call her too me, she sits and thinks about it for a good few seconds before she will come.  'sit' she has to a T - it's just getting her near me first.  She's also learned really well that our cat is not for chasing, but I suppose it's the 'come' that's bugging me most, because she used to be happy to come to me (though she's always given it a bit of thought before moving Roll Eyes )

Today the bit that's worried me most is that she isn't even that fussed about her food.  She's never been one to dash for it, which I'm just not used to seeing in a dog!  Aren't labs supposed to love their food?  She acts like she can take or leave it.
I've been giving cooked chicken fillets chopped up with rice and a little purina one.  We got her on tuesday and she would eat it all for the first couple of days, then she stopped eating the rice and now she only seems to want the chicken - what should I do?

Today I called her really enthusiatically and she took ages to even sit up, before eventually moving, but over to a friend we had visiting and would only look at me!

am I just expecting too much of her right now?

ps, she is off to the vets for vaccinations tomorrow, so I'm going to ask for opinions while I'm there

When my puppy was 11 weeks old, she wasn't that bothered about food. Even treats! She just wasn't very motivated by it at that age. I have found, with all the dogs I have cared for, that they sort of grow into loving their food as she know munches away happily - even licking the bowl looking for more!

As for the lethargy, puppies sleep a LOT. It's likely she is more confident that she is less inclined to come back to you.

If it is bizarre behaviour for her, at such a young age, I would take her to the vet to be sure!

Flynn gets worn out quickly. I have to make sure he doesnt get too tired as our other dog likes to play with him and can keep going all night! So how much id he being played with? As said puppies sleep a lot, more than i thought too! Also as for 'come' command Flynn used to come everytime, but nowhe is getting bolder he knows he doesnt have to cme everytime and can go and eat that stone instead! (where i then go to him to extract it!)

Thank you so much - I've been telling my children over and over that puppies, like babies, just sleep lots!  But why is it harder for me to listen to myself eh?  lol

Thanks for the reassurance, that's all I needed really.  Having only had her for a week, it's hard to tell exactly what is normal behaviour - we are still learning Smiley  Tonks is also not that fussed by treats - she was at first but I suppose now it's not so new she doesn't need to be so excited about them!  She does like a bit of a fuss though, so I'm going for praise instead for now.

One thing I forgot to mention is that we haven't found any games yet that she likes either   She has a few toys (squeaky ball, teddy, jingly ball on rope, chew bone thingie, fake kong style thingie) but isn't bothered by them, except for the couple of times she's run after the ball.  At first she LOVED my son's yoyo but of course I couldn't leave her alone with it - now she likes his Captain Hook's costume Hook!
She wont play with people and toys though.  Sometimes she seems to think my smallest is a litter mate and jumps all over him (he enjoys it but I'm trying to discourage!) and sometimes she runs around the house a couple of times, but mostly she just mooches about, sleeping or having a cuddle or stroke.
I guess this is all part of her still being a baby though!  Smiley

I can see I am going to be on this forum lots in the future - I never had the internet back with my old pup, and there's always so much to think about!

PS, Tonks keeps getting stones to eat too!  And today I found her trying to get a snail out of it's shell!

Hi Elaine and welcome to the forum  Smiley
What were the breeders feeding your lab before he came to you.  I would be getting him on to a good quality complete puppy food at that age.  (Do so gradually or he will get a bad tummy).  If I was given chicken fillets and plain boiled rice I would probably pick out the chicken and leave the rice too!! Then put his food down at mealtimes and pick it up again after 20 minutes if it is not eaten.

Perhaps you need to up the enthusiasm when you call him to you.  He needs you to be really exciting to come to and loads of fuss when he does (even if it involves sounding a little silly with lots of yays what a good lad when he comes) Call him with a high pitched exciting voice.  As you have small children puppies get used to their name being called out by the kids ad lib and learn to ignore it.  I get round this with dogs that are around children by using a 'recall name'  saved for when I wish the dog to come to me.  eg his name is Tonks so he is probably hearing Tonks quite a lot irregardless of whether he is called to you.  Therefore a nice long Tong-ky could be his recall name.

The same principle with Toys.  Save some toys, the ones that he is more interested in for playing with you and don't leave them lying around.  Be animated and excited enticing him to chase them in your hand and keep the games short.  If he sometimes likes a ball try rolling it initially and not too far.  Again you finish the game before he loses interest and don't leave the ball lying around for him to entertain himself with.

Lastly he will need plenty of sleep and tire very quickly at his age.  Good luck!

My puppy was also the same about toys! She had so many & didn't do much with them. I ended up having to encourage her into finding something fun to do with the toys like tugging. It takes it's time but she will want to play! She's probably more interested chewing your fingers & clothes, right?

Yep - fingers, clothes and hair all favourites for Tonks right now!

Want to hear somehting really bizzarre?  I'm in south east london and I went on a two train journey to get Tonks on tuesday.  A woman two people infront of us at the vets also had a chocolate lab, and it turned out that he was Tonks' brother from the same litter!!!  How small is this world eh?
Funny thing is how huge her brother is, I'd say about another 50% of her size added on - but he's *gorgeous* too!  I hope she catches up!  I asked what he as being fed (as not only was he growing well but he looked in fab condition) and was told Pedigree Chum Complete but I think I'll steer away from that as I've heard it's not too good.

Good news is that the vet thinks she's fine.  He did say it's unusual for a Lab to not be enthusiastic abotu food, but i reckon he's thinking like me, that hopefully it'll pick up soon.
