Rottie,
I am currently owned by a 15 mnth Rottweiler: I also adore the breed. They are fantastic dogs, such a shame the reputation they have, although most people who meet a Rottie with some manners can quickly be convinced that their fears are not justified.
There are other members of the board who I know also love the breed and may be keen to chat :)

Yes, once you have had a rott it spoils you for other breeds. I have 8 they all live in the house together 2 males and 6 ladies. Asti or Granma as she is affectionately called is nearly 12 and the oldest and Ruby is the youngest at 10 months of age. I love taking them to the beach, some like the water and some dont, but they all like going in the woods I think that is their favourite although Scrumpy and Stella love swimming in the sea. any more rott enthusiasts out there?

I'm back trying to drum up some Rottweiler support/debate. Last week I picked 2 male rotts up from the local stray kennel because they were at the end of there 9 days or however long it is that they give them. One was smaller than average and a sweetheart the kennelmaid had called him Frankie the other one was really tall but skin and bone so I called him Bennie ( Sort of after the restaurants?) Anyway Good News!! they both have new homes and are settled in already. I am getting so many calls from people wanting to give up their Rotts and the numbers being bred has really risen this last few months. If we are not careful we will be in the same situation we were about 5 years ago when we had all the bad publicity and we were run off our feet at rescue and had to let a lot of this beautiful breed down. Breeders this is a special breed, vet home properly and only let them go to live with special people. Its great dog walking weather today here on the east coast, really cold but lovely and sunny, not long been in after having my mob out for two and a half hours, must go and have somethign to eat now cos I'm starving.

I too am a great rottie lover, had three but lost one just after Christmas. Cant work out if mine are the normal or not but would never make the grade as devil dogs, they are just to damm soft!
Seeing as two of mine were rescue dogs and have suffered at the hands of fools they are the sweetest things going.
And of course to be different we have a Red Rottie, yes he is a full pedigree, just him and sister were red out of a full litter.
Lesley
Oh and I have to mention our neo x bordeaux pup who thinks he is a rottie, so please dont tell him different!!!

Hi i also have a soft spot for this great breed i have a rottie x lab, and a ped rottie and we think she is a rottie her mum is but they came from the local shelter. My middle dog the older of the 2 bitches is a P.A.T dog and is no where near the devil dog image every one thinks the dogs are. When my hubby comes home they fight to get on his knee and go to sleep in his arms. Gail and the gang.

Now then Red Rotties and Maverick, You are sOOOOOOOOOOO right, My rotts are about as much use as a chocolate fire guard when it comes to protection. I have Asti (Granma) 12yrs in May, her daughter Taboo (she is a Champion in the show ring), her brother Martell (my flatcap and slippers man, he is so laid back), then there is Dimple ( she has bone cancer but is very comfortable at the moment), then there is her half sister Stella (Stella wella wus pants, to her friends) Scrumpy, Ginty and Ruby are all Taboos babies. Its great dog walking weather at the moment, although we have a lot of deer around at the moment so we have to be careful, I dont take them all out together I go three times, they are very good but if you bumped into someone with an aggressive dog or something went wrong then 8 dogs are too much for anyone to deal with on their own, dont you think? Do your dogs run into you when you are out? Or is it just mine? I had qualified 3 dogs to go to Crufts but Ginty was pregnant so I didnt bother entering and then she absorbed the pups so now I wish I had enetered. Oh well, I will just have to go and shop!!

Clumsy is a word I use quite often usually with other words following!! There seems to be quite a rottie following going to Crufts this year, I think I will be the one with all the carry bags. I know I need some car stickers from rottie welfare cos I cant find any others and believe me I have looked, and may need a sweatshirt, oh and a polo shirt cos I have been told it gets warm in there in the afternoon. My husband cant make it so he will need a rottie type pressy. Then the dogs will need some new stuff. I have been to Cheshire dogs home today, just for a look, and got a wonderful new lead. The trouble is it was just a sample and they only had the one. It has quite a wide handle part and then the middle bit, what would usually be the chain part, is a spring. Made by Royal Canin. It is suppose to lessen the strain on your back if your dog pulls. Tried it on our big lad tonight and its brilliant, although Red is good he can sometimes be a bit excitable and this was just so good. So now need two more of those, maybe three just in case!!! Oh I love to dog shop

I have started saving already, I usually spend all my cash and give the old plastic card a bit of a battering too. Luckily my husband is coming with me because there is no way I could carry everything myself. Are you going on the friday Lesley, we are the traffic will be horrendous but the NEC should be bettter than the weekend. Have had my dogs on the beach today, it was freezing but they dont seem to bother with how cold it is and Scrumpy still went for a swim. I have been sitting with Dimple just now as she is having absent healing and so everyone I know thinks healing thoughts for her at 9pm every night and I sit with her and put my hands on her knee (where the cancer is) I feel a very strong pulse, I feel it is having a positive effect she is much brighter in her self and I feel much more positive too. Back to Crufts, I need a figurine of a Labrador for a member of committee who is resigning this year and I would like new leads, some collars, oh and bandanas my dogs love 'em, dog beds I collect those like Emelda Marcos collects shoes, I love books!!! I am a bit fussy when it comes to pictures and figurines of Rotts, I have had so many over the years that I only like REALLY good ones ( look on the Karrylite stall!!) I always look for Deerhound, Labrador, Border Terrier,Dachshund and Yorkies cos i have friends with all of these breeds. Then there is shopping for the kennels - slip leads, combs, brushes, clipper blades - need I go on!

We are going Friday. We have decieded to set off really early, well I will get a bit more sleep than Gail as she is coming down from Morcambe to pick me up!! We hope to arrive around 7 am so we miss a lot of the traffic.
How long has Dimple been suffering for? Do you feel that absent healing really works? Does her temperment change on days she is in pain?Do your other dogs realise that they need to be a bit more gentle with her?
I lost my rescue girl early January to a Gastric tumour, poor love went down hill in a week. She was only six and had suffered in the six months before I got her. She was my sofa babe, dont think she could believe her luck on finding such comfort, it took food before she would leave it, or a very full bladder!

Lesley, Its a difficult question about the absent healing, I think it lifts my spirits and Dimple REALLY likes it, you know when you have to face something like this and you are a "doer" you have to DO something and quite frankly there is not much one can do. So looking at it from that angle at least I am doing SOMETHING. On a more positive note I wouldnt be doing it if I thought it was silly (as some people do) I think there are more forces and unknowns on this planet than we know about, its doing no harm and making both of us feel better, I am also going down to London for some hands on healing, so if you want I will let you know how I get on? Let me explain a little about Dimple, she is like 10 Rottweilers rolled into one body and always has been, she is the life and soul of the party, she is slightly lame but is on painkillers she still likes to go out but I only take her with Granma and I keep Dimple on a flexi lead, she still digs up mole hills and has a route around, while her quality of life is good we will carry on , but I will not let her suffer when the time comes I have to be brave. Anyway, who knows, just maybe the healing will work and we will have her into her old age. I am feeling quite positive as yesterday I had lunch with the vet and was giving her an update and when I said she is only on 1 +1/2 Rimadyl a day (down from 4) she couldnt believe it!! I know how painful this condition is as I have had the misfortune to lose another of my precious companions to it about 3 years ago, so the very fact that she is on low painkillers and is exhibiting no signs of pain is a bit of a miracle in itself, so anyone reading this PLEASE think healing thoughts for Dimple at 9pm each night when you can, the more people the merrier. Just looked back at my post my how I go on! CHanging the subject now - I am going to pick up a Rott bitch from the stray kennels on Thursday I saw her when i last picked the 2 boys up but she had not been there long enough to come out, her time is up Thursday, so i will collect and she will get a new home. Just a quick question to anyone reading this post, where do they all come from? Who throws a mature pedigree dog out? and why? I mean I know the odd one will be lost or stray off but come on there are far too many being picked up off the street. Maybe the low price that a lot of backstreet breeders charge is detrimental to the breed making them a disposable commodity? What does anyone else think? I mean the flip side of higher prices is this (in my humble opinion) if reputable breeders put their prices up and some are charging £800.00 then surely the backstreet breeder can put his price up to lets say £400.00 for an unregistered pup so that in itself makes the Rottweiler into a better prospect for unscrupulous people to breed from? What does anyone else think?? I breed (not very often) and I am in contact with EVERY puppy I have bred and vet homes strictly, if there is ANYTHING I do not like when I meet prospective puppy owners then the answer is NO. All my puppies go with a breeding restriction that is signed by the new owner and this ensures that a puppy is not being bought as a breeding machine, I would rather keep them all (and I have the space) then they go the the wrong home, I will also not sell to anyone who is wanting to keep the dog outside. Rottweilers (as do all dogs) want to be with you. If I could have my dogs with me 24 hours a day I would, I do work from home but still have to do some work with boarders!!! Anyway I have gone on enough now, please post your thoughts even if you arent lucky enough to have a Rottweiler for your best friend.

I will keep Dimples on my thoughts. Good luck with your trip to London, please do let us know how you get on.
I dont know what the answer is to the problem of dogs in Rescue. It amazes me to the sheer amount of older dogs that come in, not just our breed but others to. My dogs are part of my family and couldn't bear to be with out them. On another site we have been talking about doggy godparents. If anything should happen to us and our families are not in the position to take on our dogs a desinated person will take them on, if they cant keep them they will endevour to find new forever homes with the right people rather than them ending up in rescue.
I always worry for breeds such as ours ending up in the wrong hands, they get such a bad time from the press etc and joe public gets a blurred view of them.
Unfortunatly our society is a throw away one and to some a dog is just a dog. I for one would like to see stricter breeding controls. I know the kennel club will only register so many pups out of a certain bitch, but now we have other registers too which confuses people. It is time the Kennel Club did more than just register pups, they are in a good position to do so. I wouldnt like to stop the breeding of dogs, I would hate to think I could never get another rot but something needs to be done. I agree that high prices do open the door for backstreet breeders and puppy farmers. I know the cost of raising a litter is high but some prices do get silly especially if you are just wanting a family pet.
I will be quiet now as this is one of my favourite rants and could go on forever about it. Good luck for Thursday and let us know how you get on with her.

Thanks for those kind words Lesley. Have you heard of the Cinnamon Trust? It is a charity based in Cornwall and they look after your dogs in a home environment when you die or if you get infirm and cannot walk your dogs anymore they have volunteers all over the country that will come and walk your dog I am a member because my husband and I dont have any children to look after our dogs for us when and if! I have had dealings with them through the boarding kennels and they are fantastic, really kind and nothing is too much trouble for them. I have been out taking pictures of my mob in the woods its gorgeous here the sun is shining and its very mild.
