if you have never owned a dog before, start reading all you can about puppy care. Your local library will have loads of books on the subject aswell as books on the breed.
Without knowing some of your circumstances it's hard to know how to advise you. Will it be left on its own all day while you both work?
Do your research with regard to hereditary diseases like hip displaysia. Google will throw up lots of informative websites about the breed.
 Why a labrador in particular?

Visit different breeders and don't buy the first puppy you see!!!!!
buy from a breeder that you like! very important if you like the way they are raising the pups and you feel able to ask them any questions about the pup, you will have a better chance of getting good aftersale advice. make sure you have a list of questions before your visit and expect to get the third degree from a good breeder, they will be worried about the home they are sending their baby to.

And don't forget to ask:
are the parents hip scored? Can I see their score sheets? Are the parents eye tested? Can I see their certificates? Can I see the mother?
If the breeder answers no or says the tests haven't been done then leave it.
he best breeders are the ones who insist on having the dog back if anything happens. Sadly, couples moving house, splitting up or having a baby are the most commonly used reasons as to why they are getting rid of the dog. Think hard and ask yourself, what will happen if you and your partner split up. Could one of you afford to keep the dog? What if you have to move into rented accommodation. Will you search and search until you find a landlord happy to accept your dog or perhaps pay more rent or a higher deposit? What if you fall pregnant and you have no time for anything, not even sleeping. What about the dog then? Too many young couples get a puppy as a surrogate baby and dump it when a real baby comes along. These are some of the things you need to sit down and consider before you think about where to get a puppy.
