Hi. At the moment i feed my 2 puppies Nutro large breed puppy food at £37.99 a 15kg bag. Are there any better quality large breed puppy foods available in the U.K such as Eagle Pack, Chicken Soup or Blue Buffalo? Where can i get them and are they going to cost even more? Thanks.

Not being Funny.. but going by that quote you have no idea on reading dog food lables James wellbeloved first ingredients meaning the bulk of the food is RICE and then there Second source is Meat.. then you go down the scale in what is added in the food going by the amounts in the feed..

ok dogs dont need beet/pulp i agree as these are fillers but it so far down the list the amount is not going to be to much of a problem
dogs dont need white rice as used in james Well now Eagle first ingredient is meat the main intake of the feed NOT RICE the second is Breown rice better source of rice..
Also dog dont need chloride but you will find this in any feed along with other chemicals....
ok try this link

Quite agree - thats why i dont feed any dog food to my dog - and why if i did id choose burns over jwb i know dogs dont need white rice another reason for me not feeding it but jwb is certainly better than a lot of other dog foods out there.

Thank you for explaining how the list of ingredients works - it really isnt necessary i know perfectly well how it works - you have another look at the ingredients listed up there = lamb meal - you have any idea what that is?!! And so it may seem that meat is the first ingredient but being followed by rice corn and oatmeal means that rubbish out weighs any meat in that food.

Its the very fact you cannot trust what goes into the foods that means i wont feed them.

Just too much 'stuff' in that food -
white rice- not so good for dogs and brewers yeats again not something id want my dog having!!! and while it may have meat listed as the first ingredient and the second it also has two types of rice so the rice content isnt far behind!

quite high in protein too i find most average pets cannot tolerate that much protein and it would have some dogs bouncing off the walls!  Rolling Eyes

its obviouly a case of what suits each dog of course  Rolling Eyes

Have read about feeding puppies on food formulated for their size, how did we manage to feed puppies years ago? before these foods came on the market? My  last two puppies I reared on the same food that the adult dogs were being fed, they didn't suffer any ill effects from this way of rearing. I now feed all my dogs on food made by The Land of Holistic Pets they're thriving on it.  The web pages are interesting to read not everybody will agree with the theory behind this food but it works for me and my dogs. Its worth a look around the web pages. www.landofholisticpets.co.uk

I'm a big believer in variety. Even if one finds "the best dog food in the UK", is this ideal? We wouldn't be healthy or happy eating the same thing every single day, and I don't believe our dogs are either.

My approach is to use a quality dry food, but to supplement it. For example:
- Quality table scraps (not gravy and french fries!!!)
- Mixer and meat
- Vegetables and raw fruit

I don't think I have the knowledge and time to build a nutritionally complete diet based on home-made food, so I do use commercial foods. However, supplementing these with a variety of fresh and high-quality ingredients as noted above provides taste variety for the dogs, reduces the total intake of chemical additives, and helps to cover any nutritional short-falls that one specific food might offer.

A site that discusses various philosophies of dog feeding is:
http://www.dog-food-corner.com

It is independent and you might find it of use. I like its philosophy.

Food is one of those things which people will argue over untill the grim reaper calls.

Dry food causes early death, bone cancer, aggression, depression and a whole load of other things - that is - if you listen to raw feeders, ask them for any scientific evidence and they come up with nothing at all, of the billions of tons eaten every day.

Burns feeders say the same about bakers, bakers feders say the sameabout eukeneuba, hill science feeders say the same about raw feeders and so it goes on..............and on.

I avoid all foods containing wheat and glutten, I go for a rice based food the one I use is Iams, I have had no known problems with it, my dogs appear to me and to the casual observer to be in tip top condition, that includes stanima, so I stick with Iams chicken and rice.

I feed Burns now.  No wheat which apparently can be cause a problem with allergies.  Have to say Ruperts looked better on this than on any of the junk he was on before.  I didn't even know there were better quality foods around until early this year.  Shocked
May not be as good as a home made diet but I haven't the time or space to prepare one unfortunately.  Rupe looks great on it so I can't complain.
