Hi. At the moment i feed my 2 puppies Nutro large breed puppy food at £37.99 a 15kg bag. Are there any better quality large breed puppy foods available in the U.K such as Eagle Pack, Chicken Soup or Blue Buffalo? Where can i get them and are they going to cost even more? Thanks.

Hiya dont think there is such a thing as best pup food depends on what you want to feed your dog. Nutro is ok if you are looking for big pieces james wellbeloved do a large breed £37 a bag  slightly betta food dependin on what you want.

JWB is not a higher quality food than Nutro!

JWB uses meat-meal (see the ingredients) 'meal' is ground up heads, claws etc.  Nutro uses only 'meat' fit for human consumption!
Also JWB has 'gravy' in it, this is blended intestines!

Stick with nutro, it is the best food you will get in the uk.

I feed Arden Grange Large breed to my pups for dried food in the evening and nature diet in the morning.

A few people who have mastiffs recommended it to me (as it is supposed to be good with regards to swelling up as we all worry about bloat) and i have had no complaints or problems the only problem i find is i am diorganised and you order it over the net where i live as there are no stockists luckily it only takes two days to come.

Whether it is better than Burns or JWB, Nutro or any of the others is debateable but i like it and most other brands do not seem to do a proper large breed puppy food though i think burns may have bought one in not too long ago?

Burns have got one, and I think JWB do too. The only other brand I can think of that has a decent large breed is royal canin..the words never and million years!

Staffweiler_Mastiff,

I assume you do not want to feed raw? If not, this is what I would recommend.

There is actually no need to feed a large breed puppy formula food. Most of the best dry foods are formulated to be used for all life stages, so can be used from a puppy through adulthood - lets face it, pups in the wild do not eat anything different to the adults, they just get first pickings to make sure they are well fed.

For the price you are paying for the Nutro you could try any of the following: Fromm Family Adult Gold, Eagle Pack Holistic Select, Canidae or Timberwolforganics. All of these can be ordered online. I don't think you can get the Chicken Soup or Blue Buffalo here in the UK.I beleive the Timberwolforganics range is the best you can but in the UK (I would recommend that you use these sites for information on the components of dry food: http://www.dogfoodproject.com/index.php?page=main or http://www.dogfoodanalysis.com/ ).

I get the Timberwolforganics range from http://www.zooplus.co.uk/shop/dogs/dry_dog_food . Their service is excellent.

Welsh Chick,

You might want to review what you said about meat 'meal'..

Contrary to what many people believe, meat sources in "meal" form (as long as they are from a specified type of animal) are not inferior to whole, fresh meats. Meals consist of meat and skin, with or without the bones, but exclusive of feathers/hair, heads, feet, horns, entrails etc. and have the proper calcium/phosphorus ratio required for a balanced diet. They have had most of the moisture removed, but meats in their original, "wet" form still contain about 75% water. Once the food reaches its final moisture content, the meat will have shrunk to 1/4 of the original amount, while the the meal form remains the same and you get more concentrated protein per pound of finished product.

So assuming the meal type is named (i.e chicken, salmon, lamb etc.) it is a perfectly good ingredient!

I too would advocate feeding raw but if the person has never done this he should wait and experiment when the dog is older, make sure he has done all the research read plenty of books etc. also every dog is different and large breeds grow at such an exceptional rate to get the proteins vitamins and nutrients i would not suggest it until he has practised on adult adult dogs and done the reasearch.

I aplogise if the op is a she Very Happy

Say no more. Do you know why Pedigree purchased Royal Canin?

Nestle acquired Ralston Purina, which instantly made Nestle the largest pet food manufacturer in the world. Pedigree/Mars didn't like the sound of that so they responded by paying more than $696 for a controlling stake in Royal Canin. Royal Canin's actual food had always been pretty well thought of prior to this association.

I used to buy it for my elderly collie, it was the only thing he would eat. I avoid all pedigree, nestle, bakers etc like the plague

Please look at the PFMA site for labels and their meanings in the UK for the definition of meat meal.

One must also differentiate between "meat not fit for human consumption" and "meat that humans choose not to eat".

There is hardly anything not fit for human consumption in animal body parts, whether or not we choose to eat them of course is a personal decision!

For example, testicles and brains are eaten as a matter of course by many people all over the world, as is spinal cord etc.  Many would balk at this even supposing that some of this material was available in the UK post the BSE scandal.  Pigs Head, brawn etc is still enjoyed by many in the UK and there is nothing wrong in consuming feet/claws etc (again trotters are a savoury dish to some) I actually feed raw pigs trotters to my dogs.

Puppies and young adults grow perfectly well without specially formulated diets however this is a marketing opportunity for commercial products.

There are several brands which purport to be designed for large breeds and I know that Royal Canin is advocated by many.

Basically you pays your money and you takes your choice although there are some ingredients I personally would avoid but that is JMHO.

I don't feed commercial food myself but there is a brand out there for everyone and every dog.

There are strict rules about what may and may not be put into pet food and so I think it is wise to gen up on the facts rather than put forward ill informed opinions with no basis in truth.
