Staffweiler_Mastiff,
I assume you do not want to feed raw? If not, this is what I would recommend.
There is actually no need to feed a large breed puppy formula food. Most of the best dry foods are formulated to be used for all life stages, so can be used from a puppy through adulthood - lets face it, pups in the wild do not eat anything different to the adults, they just get first pickings to make sure they are well fed.
For the price you are paying for the Nutro you could try any of the following: Fromm Family Adult Gold, Eagle Pack Holistic Select, Canidae or Timberwolforganics. All of these can be ordered online. I don't think you can get the Chicken Soup or Blue Buffalo here in the UK.I beleive the Timberwolforganics range is the best you can but in the UK (I would recommend that you use these sites for information on the components of dry food:
http://www.dogfoodproject.com/index.php?page=main or
http://www.dogfoodanalysis.com/ ).
I get the Timberwolforganics range from
http://www.zooplus.co.uk/shop/dogs/dry_dog_food . Their service is excellent.
Welsh Chick,
You might want to review what you said about meat 'meal'..
Contrary to what many people believe, meat sources in "meal" form (as long as they are from a specified type of animal) are not inferior to whole, fresh meats. Meals consist of meat and skin, with or without the bones, but exclusive of feathers/hair, heads, feet, horns, entrails etc. and have the proper calcium/phosphorus ratio required for a balanced diet. They have had most of the moisture removed, but meats in their original, "wet" form still contain about 75% water. Once the food reaches its final moisture content, the meat will have shrunk to 1/4 of the original amount, while the the meal form remains the same and you get more concentrated protein per pound of finished product.
So assuming the meal type is named (i.e chicken, salmon, lamb etc.) it is a perfectly good ingredient!
