Hi im new to this forum; and have a couple of questions regarding the choice of a new dog.
I have trawled through countless websites and have bought a book on selecting the right puppy but have still not been able to come to a conclusion on which breed would be best for me and my partner, here is a list of my 'good' and 'bad' points to my current position.

1.) I live in an apartment, and although it is  large it has no garden (Its does have a 4meter square balcony), this apartment over looks a large parks so walking in a nice environment is never far away.

2.) As I live in an apartment, I cannot have a loud dog that is constantly barking, I dont want any neighbours coming round at 3am  Very Happy  Very Happy

3.)I own my own business and can work exclusively at home, this means I can be with the dog most of the day

4.)I do want a dog that will be protective without being outright aggressive

I know im being very specific but i have to get this right; I really like Minature Pinscers and Manchester Terriers but I have heard both breeds are noisy and extremely active.

Any suggestions on suitable breeds would be really apppreciated!

Thank You

Hi, I am new too and it sounds as if we have similar requirements!  I am starting my own home-based business and therefore have the time to spend with a dog, I live in an apartment with only a small patch of bark chippings and generic shrubs out the front, and I don't want a dog that barks all the time  The only thing that's different is that I need it to be able to at least tolerate (and not be a danger to) my 6 houserabbits - supervised at all times, of course.  I've been thinking about a Papillon or a Japanese Chin - I'm not going for any terriers as they have a tendency to want to chase small furry things whereas toy breeds don't have as many of those traits.

Good luck finding something suitable!

I would def go for a shih tzu, they dont need big gardens, they dont bark a lot and are very loyal and affectionate.

I have a narrowboat which is obviously nowhere near as big as a house and my little shih tzu is great on it he loves it.

I dont live on the boat but im always going to it and i always take me dog with me.

All the dogs mentioned would be fine. If you would like a Manchester Terrier etc I would go ahead and get one, so long as you walk it twice during the day for say 1/2 hr and stimulate its brain with training properly, it will be fine. A tired dog is a happy dog   Good luck with your quest.
