I have got two very troubled BCs am working with at the moment and am frankly staggered that someone who claims they are a professional in the canine field would even contemplate this. Very disappointed!

Just listen to this sad but true tale.

A BC came to our training club nearly 2 years ago.  He was from working lines.  Lovely looking red boy but boy with serious problems.  He had severe brain damage it was found out later.  I also found out that every puppy from that litter was put down as they all had severe brain damage.

i wouldn't be surprised if the person who bred them was like the person here.  Didn't look into the lines, check the suitability with their dogs lines etc.

The owners of this male have kept him alive.  He is hardly able to walk.  Gets excited at the site of other dogs and wants to play but of course can't because his brain doesn't realise his restrictions.

I myself feel that he should of been put down a long time ago.  It is so sad seeing a dog that still has a brain with the working mentality that can't even stand let alone do the job his brain so crave.

Alan if I had a BC bitch I wanted a litter from I would look for the very best pairing that could be made in order to minimise any health problems from the litter.  My bitch would have been hip scored and eye cleared (the latter annually) and I would look for the same from the potential sire.

I would be looking for a BC dog that had proved itself either in the showring or in another competitive discipline.

As there are LOADS of BC stud dogs that meet this criteria your dog would not enter into the equation at all.

I met a lovely BC puppy last year. Sociable, doing really well with his training an absolute joy to his owner. A while later his owner got another male pup, equally as handsome. Turns out he was the son of her older dog. She had used him at stud just before his first birthday. Whilst she was concentrating on training the pup the older dog became increasingly troublesome, particularly around other dogs and his relationship with his son is very rocky.

It could be just his age, the fact that another dog joined the household and he wasn't getting the attention, who knows, but she does regret letting him mate with her friend's bitch and believes it to be a contributary factor to his behaviour. Neutral

I think animal testing is a terrible idea. They get all nervous and then they give the wrong answers.

As you probabluy knwo now, I have adopted a Border terrier pup.

However disregarding that, I did go down my local rspca home and there were no Border Collies there at all Smile
Most people who want collies in the Liverpool area keep them very well looked after.

Alan - I'd just like to congratulate you on taking the advice given on the forum and adopting a pup instead of breeding.

Your idea of giving OAP dogs a nice home to retire in is brilliant and it is exactly what i'll be doing as soon as I get into my own house (living with parents atm - nightmare!).

all the best to you and your puppy Smile

Hiya Alan
It looks like youve caused quite a stir in here ha ha Ive 3 Border collies all rescue all pedigree none i would breed from ... If you wanted to breed from your dogs you really should of went and bought breeding quality dogs from a well respected breeder ... No decent border collie owner would allow her bitch to mate with your dog if she cared at all about her dog and not with just the money she might get from the pups
Take care
