Hi,

Not come into contact with a staffie before  but my friend thinks they are all badly behaved dangerous dogs.  Ive heard alot of bad incidents involving staffies but i do not believe they are 'bad'.  Please can anyone back this up??

Staffies are wonderful dogs, very good with people especially children but they are Terriers and were bred to fight bulls.

Unfortunately it is now good for the idiots to be seen with an agressive Staffy, it helps their street cred and it is thise idiotic owners that turn these dogs aggressive, they train them to attack people.   Any dog will do this if they are taught to.

I have a Staffy cross and she is loved by everyone who meets her because of her gentle nature.  When I first got her 3 years ago she would try and kill any dog she met but I suspect that was because she hadn't been socialised with them by her previous owner.  She doesn't do this now and since she came, I have introduced 3 more dogs into my house with no problems.  She will even let them take her food off her.

I replied to this thread on the general site but agree with Emmy. Our staffie cross is such a gentle, loving little dog. We had never had a staffie before but I would definitely get one again. Louis is so good with people and other dogs. Our cocker spaniel bosses him about and he is so very gentle with her it's cute.

What a great story smokeybear. My Louis isn't that good but he is certainly a well behaved little boy and loves agility (he's a beginner).

I don't often meet Staffies but any that I do meet up with have been nice dogs. That doesn't mean that ALL Staffies are nice any more than a nasty one means ALL Staffies are nasty.

I like Staffies it's the other end of the lead that can cause problems

Yeh Cava youve hit it on the head, Its the owners that are the problem! But any dog as Emmy says will attack if they are taught...As their just trying to please their owners.

I know 3 Staffies that live down my road and they are all so sweet. Bruno's the biggest out of the 3 and all he wants is his belly tickled, oh and a wee biscuit if youve got one in your pocket. Laughing

I just wish something could get done with the idiots that use them as a macho image rather than the loving wee dogs they can be. Evil or Very Mad

I couldn't agree more. I have a Staff, the first I have owed. She is nearly one now and is the brightest dog I have every owned. By far the best in our obedience class and so loving  Very Happy

I agree - any dog if he/she is not well looked after and socialised can be taught to be aggressive - I have known many staffies and they have all been wonderful! my best friends has two at the moment and they are both the most cuddly things I have ever known!

As far as I am aware they are only one of two breeds in which the KC specifies they are good with children.

see: http://www.staffords.co.uk/sbtbc/standard.htm

I think they are wonderful dogs and I feel your friend is either speaking from no experience or a bad one.

This is one of the reasons I got Yemi.
I spent months reading around the internet when I decided to get another dog. I had never really given much thought to getting a Staff as I was never fond of their appearance  Embarassed Yes I wanted something fluffy and cute  Rolling Eyes
However my main concern was getting a dog with a good reputation with kids. Which brought me back to Staffs every time. I took my son (5 years ) with me when I went to view Yemi. I didn't even look at the puppies until I had spent time with their mom. Once I had decided their mom was a brilliant dog. I looked at the puppies and Yemi chose me  Very Happy
The best thing I ever did.

I too can vouch for staffies being friendly.

Keira, my 14 month old just loves any other dog, person or child.

We had a house full last night, as we are doggie sitting for parents who are away, and they have two retrievers, a black one (Zak - 8 yrs old) and a 'blonde' one (Jake - 2 yrs old).  Our friends came with their two dogs, a 15 week old staffie (Frankie) and their collie (Rossi - 6 yrs), mixed with our two Henry (Bulldog - 20 wks old) and Keira my 14 mth old staffie!!!

They all got on like a house on fire and were all running around and all playing together - it was absolute mayhem!!!!!!  But....... absolutely brilliant to see them all getting on with each other.  Consequently, our friends have left this morning and all doggies are fast asleep after haring around for hours with each other last night  Very Happy

Staffies are one of the most affectionate breeds towards people out there in my experience.

I worked in Boarding kennels as a kid and although they were not as popular then as they are now, any staffie that came in was always a joy to work with. I love the way that they get so excited when greeting you that they seem to loose control of their bodies and end up in a heap on the floor lol

As everyone here as pointed out, it's the owners who can turn these great dogs bad.
