I didn't know about it to be honest but I went on their website and had a look. Looks like it could be a lot of fun if you're just getting into gundog training. If you really want to learn how to train a gundog though, Ian Openshaw's videos are excellent and Keith Erlandson's books are a benchmark. Very inspiring. Then once you're set, when country fair season comes around get Charlie into some scurries or some working tests. Nothing, and I mean nothing, beats the feeling you get knowing you are enabling your dog to enjoy exactly what they were born and bred to do.

Choccilab- I thought it might help me build up some confidence and I'll check out the vids and books, thanks DenisWhy not take a training holiday to the US, Martin Deeley is there and he is very highly respected international gundog trainer from Yorks. These days you can get a pet passport for US so you take choci with you, if you do let me know there’s a couple of things you might be persuaded to bring back for me, avoid the tornado season, I want my gifts back in one piece. http://www.martindeeley.com/cart.cfm?cart_action=category_detail&category_guid=f33c49b2-65bf-d230-4c86-2342d7ac1062

Choccilab - I take it your dog is a chocolate lab? This means he will be of show lines probably and he may not have the drive required for working tests etc but he can no doubt be trained to do some fun gundog work such as scurries etc
There is quite a difference between shown line labs and working line labs, just as it is with spaniels and some terriers.

Hi seddie, Charlie is a chocolate lab. I just want us to have fun, he's 4 months at the mo and he's a great little retriever and the gundog club grades look like a fun way to train and keep motivated

Martin Deeley does the narration on Ian Openshaw's videos and he has written a good book on training. Me being a results and achievement driven kind of chap I have to say, what Ian doesn't know about gundog training probably isn't worth knowing. He's set just about every single record there is to set with working gundogs and I find his videos to be some of the most honest in terms of showing a dog working and how he sets about making corrections and generally interacting with the dog. I think a lot of training videos are totally over edited, the bits they take out are the bits most people would benefit from seeing the most!! i.e. the dogs not behaving perfectly and the trainer doing what they would normally do when training on their own.

There are several chocolate labradors competing at a high level in both Field Trials, Working Tests and in other disciplines such as Working Trials not to mention working in the shooting field.
There is a commonly held myth that Chocolates are less "able" than black or yellows; poppycock.
Old wives tales will prevail despite lack of evidence to support these claims; it is just prejudice.
If you have never participated in any sort of dog training then the gundog club grades may be suited to you.
However these are not KC licensed nor do they provide any advantage, IMHO, over training for KC licensed working tests or field trials with the relevant club.

There are several Choccies with FTW and Sandra halstead (Drakeshead kennels) and Ged Leeson are working Chocs to name but two.
Drakeshead is probably the most famous working lab kennel in the UK!
So don't let people tell you that choccies do not work or come from show lines rather than working. It all depends on what colours the sire/dam throws and as I am sure you know you can have a litter with all three colours in.
Just because people say it don't make it so..........
