Hi.  My daughter has a 10 week old Shar Pei, who has had the first of his two vaccinations.  The vet said she should keep him away from dogs she didn't know.  She took this to mean make sure he didn't come into actual contact with any dogs, and they took him out with them (on a picnic in a park of all places  Shocked, where he spent most of the time asleep under a pram!)

Now I've read that they can pick up infections just from being on pavements or grass where a strange dog may have urinated or defecated and I'm worried he may be at risk.

(She's not as irresonsible as she may sound - she actually asked the vet if the puppy could pick anything up through his paws if she let him out in the garden, as foxes visited and she was worried he might catch something from them, and the vet smiled and said he's be fine, so she assumed he'd be OK providing she kept him away from actual contact with other dogs.)

I realise no-one can know if an infected dog had actually been anywhere the puppy had been, but how much at risk is he still likely to be considering he's had the first of his two jabs.  Should she get the vet to look him over?

Any advice appreciated.  Thanks.

there any mant contributing factors such as what diseases are in your area etc but the best thing to do if you are worried is give the vet a ring and ask him as he will know the risks in your area

Thanks hennaly, she said she will give the vet a ring, just to make sure.

If it makes you feel any better I take all my dogs out on the ground when I bring them home at 7 weeks before they are vaccinated at 9 weeks.

Nothing has ever happened to them.

Do you take your shoes off when you come in the house?

If not your dog is just as likely to pick up something from your shoes as it is if it walks on the pavement.

The pup has had his vacc's then its time to get it out and socialised ... I honestly would be more concerned about socialising the pup than infections ... If he is going to pick up an infection he will at any age and any time so wouldnt be worried

I think animal testing is a terrible idea. They get all nervous and then they give the wrong answers.

So pleased to see the replies to this about taking them out - our pups came into contact with three dogs when they were born, Dad Mum and Aunt, my dog who is no longer vaccinated at 16, and as they are brother and sister we decided from day one to seperate them for 2 hours a day, damn good excuse for the pub! and people have been looking at us as if we are mad.

They had their first jab las Friday so decided as it was quiet to let one walk down as far as they wanted to go and the look I got off one of my friends was awful.

As far as I remember you could always take them out after their first vaccination, and I might be remembering wrongly when I was training we would accept them for basic training after their first.
