I have 2 cats. One is 5 years and the other 6 years. They are both BSH breed. Due to their previous owners they have been up until now, house bound. House cats to be precise. We got them from Battersea and we have kept them as house cats and they have been well looked after and loved. One cat in particular is very clingy.

Anyway...In about a month we are moving from our flat to a house with a small garden. Excellent we will be able to let them go outside.

We do though have concerns.

1) How do we train cats at that age to poop outside and not in ?
2) Are they likely to be petrified at going out doors ? Will it be cruel to keep them outside a lot of the time or is that a normal thing for cats ?
3) How do we stop them clawing at stuff ? In a new home I know they like marking their areas...they did it here at the flat.

Any advice would be great. We want them to spend as much as possible outside but we wont have a cat flap straight away. Am I worrying too much ?

FILLING A LITTER TRAY WITH BOUGHT SOIL, UNLOADING A LOAD OF THE BOUGHT SOIL SOMEWHERE IN THE GARDEN THEY WILL FIND IT.
WHEN THEY HAVE SOILED IN TRAY REMOVE THE POOPS AND PUT IN SOIL SPOT OUTSIDE. ALSO SHUT THEM OUT FOR A GOOD FEW HOURS, SUMMERTIME USUALLY GETS THE TRANSITION DONE FAIRLY QUICKLY.

These cats might not want to go out they have been house cats for 5+6 years why are you wanting them to be out as much as possible ? And even if they get out why you wanting them to do the toilet outside ? its disgusting you still should still have at least 2 litter trays in the house for them if at any time in the future they need to be kept indoors for treatment youll have an awful time trying to retrain them to do the toilet indoors in there trays ... If you buy them a good activity centre for them to claw dont be put off if they ignore it for a month or so and buy a water gun so if they claw yer suite etc just use the water gun on them ... I really not sure how to say this but are you sure you still want the cats when you move ? because it just seems that everything that these cats are and have you want totally different maybe you should think of rehoming them ?? I am in rescue and the agreement i have all my new owners sign is that they can allow the to go out aslong as they have a catflap and are not near busy roads ... The cats are allowed out but not to be put out and at all times have to have a clean litter tray available aswell as food and water at all times which have to be indoors ...I really do hope you think long and hard about whats best for them maybe someone who is willing to give them what they have been used to might be the way to go ... Take care & Good luck with the move

Best thing to do would be to let your cats get used to their new house first.... keep them in for about 6weeks, then slowly introduce them to the outside world. If you're in a house and have a back garden with a back door, you could take a wander with them round the garden..even if it's just outside or on the doorstep.... then gradually let them go farther and farther out...but stay out with them until they have confidence.... they probably will still want to pee indoors until they feel safe enough to go outdoors, do things one at a time.... also, for moving it might help to make them feel safe quicker if you get a Feliway diffuser into your new house a couple days before you actually move in.... it will give them a warm feeling of belonging.
