I really want to get a Shiba, and I have researched them and I am very keen on getting one. But some people say you should be an experienced dog owner, which I am not. I have only had one dog, and that was when I was younger but I babysit my aunts dogs, and my friends dogs alot and I really love dogs. Do you think I could handle a Shiba?

Erm I dont know you so cant really say ... Have you spoken to breeders, trainers and owners ??? I think this is a question you have to ask yourself do you think you can cope bringing up and training one of these dogs ? ... I personally wouldnt advise it but then like i said before i dont know you ... You have to put in the time and be very dedicated in training these dogs these types of breeds the females tend to be less dominating behaviour than the males .... When it comes down to it tho hun only you can decide only you know what you can cope with ... Good luck with whatever you decide to do

I looked into one of these when I was looking for a second dog last year. I went and met a few breeders, and saw their dogs, the first thing I will say is that they are a big dog in a little body! They are very similar to akitas, in that most of them wont be able to come off their leads, and can be very stubborn. They are very beautiful and cuddly, but very independent. You need at least 7ft fences and they must be secure, as they can climb over fences.

My neighbours have Shiba Inus.  They are a stunning dog to look at but a very independent breed, always escaping and very difficult to train to be reliable off lead.

A friend also had a rescue Shiba that she never let off lead despite having five other rescue dogs that were fine off lead.

I think animal testing is a terrible idea. They get all nervous and then they give the wrong answers.

I Think they are very beautiful breed, very proud looking. although very hard work. check this web site out.

i think if you understand the amount of work you'll be taking on then your half way there to making an informed decision.

you seem to be researching it well. i agree only you will know if you have the patience for this dog. good luck, hope you are happy with your decition.

Thanks, I think I might wait a while but I think I'll get one, I know they're headstrong and hard to train but I have the patience and think it will be a great dog. The only breeders close to me, aren't that close, but I'll get in contact with them, Thank you.
