Hi everyone, I'm new to the forum, and just after some information regarding getting a new puppy (at some point in the near future). Basically I've been looking at Staffordshire Bull Terriers, as I've heard they are lovely dogs, and also great with kids. The ones I've also come into contact with have been extremely friendly and happy to meet me (me being a stranger at the times I saw these dogs). The thing is it seems so many people have these dogs, and me being me, I would like to be slighlty different. I've seen Staffordshire Terrier Shar Pei cross pups on the internet, and although not a registered breed as such, they are lovely looking dogs. I'm just unsure of the 'basic' characteristics of this cross bred type of dog? What type of price should I pay for a dog of this type/breed? I was also looking at 'Blue' Staffords as I've never run into one of these before, what sort of price should these sell for? I've seen a variety from £600 - £1000. Any information would be much appreciated. PS May I add my girlfriend is expecting a baby in 15 weeks, how far after the babys birth would be a good idea to get a dog? Also is it feasable to have this type of breed in a flat, as long as it's exercised properly? Thanks in advance!

You are spot on that Staffys' are great dogs and are renowned for being good with kids (usual rules apply of course, regarding never leaving kids and dogs together).
Unfortunately, there is no information I (or anyone else) can give you on how a Shar-pei x Staffy would be. The pups may have the temperament of a Shar-Pei or a Staffy or anywhere in between (they are very different dogs!).
My personal recommendation would be to research good Staffy breeders (bare minimum from a KC registered kennel). Anyone breeding Shar-Pei x Staffy pups is not going to be a good breeder.
Beware of adverts for 'Blue Staffords', 'Irish Staffords' etc. they are not recognised KC breeds and are usually an excuse for people to sell poorly bred dogs for more money.

Good info IJF. i would also look into the health issues of the Shar Pei. I can't understand why anyone would contemplate such a cross mating. Also remember that these pup would be a crossbred and should be priced as such.As you are expecting a baby i would suggest you go to a reputable breeder where you can see their stock and ther temperment. Good Luck.

Just a bit of advice on getting a puppy with a newborn baby.................It's going to bloody hard work Settle in with your new little bundle of joy first and once you feel normal again and are not suffering from sleep exhaustion take your time to find a reputable breeder good luck

I noticed when I was applying for pet insurance for my dog that, at least with M&S anyway, that they will not cover Shar Pei (or Pit Bull, APBT, Dog Argentinos, Tosa,) or ANY DOGS CROSSED WITH THESE BREEDS.
worth looking into thoroughly if you're hoping to get pet insurance to help cover vet costs throughout life...

(going off topic here for a mo sorry SouthEastBlue - at my puppy class, every dog there is bigger and older than little Hovis, and they all seem to like to nip and pick on him, especailly the two other lab puppies in the class it's only a 4 week course though, so hopefuly not long enough to do any lasting damage. really keen to find some friendly dogs to play with soon!)

That shouldn't be allowed to happen at a puppy class.

I think animal testing is a terrible idea. They get all nervous and then they give the wrong answers.

Why would anyone cross these two breeds, both nice in their own way but could also be a disaster. A friend of mine has just had two Shar Pei's put down because the skin problems were sooooo bad!

Shar Pei pups have to have their eyes stitched open because of all the excess skin around them?

ALL Shar pei do?????
Surely only those that have eye problems?
Blue Staffs ARE a colour and are generally more expensive because of the scarcity of that colour. A friend of mine has one and it is stunning.

Quite right - blue is a recognised colour for a staffy (and very nice they are too). Personally, I would not buy from a breeder who was breeding primarily for a colour or used colour as their 'selling point'!

Most of them do not however most are human and are prey to the laws of supply and demand. A lot of breeders for example charge more for bitch puppies than dog puppies (because you can breed from them) I think that is unethical. A lot of people try to charge more for "scarcity" value ie White GSD. Some because it is a "rare" breed. If 20 people want a blue staffy you can name your price after all.........
