Hi,
Just got my pet insurance renewal notice today from M&S. It cost £10 p/m last year and I haven't claimed or anything so I assumed it would be similar to renew. Not so - it has come out at £16.90, thats nearly £7 per month more. I looked on money supermarket website where they compare different companies and M&S aren't even on. Very odd. Anyway, have decided to go with More than who have a similar policy for £11 per month. Cheeky M&S!!!!

Very cheeky indeed. I'm with M&S as their price was really good with no excess on claims. I'll keep an eye on it now though. I hope they haven't hooked people in with the plan to nearly double the premiums after year one. If they have, I'll let them know about it.

Hmm. I just have. Everyone elses price seems very good compared to mine - i'm paying £22 a month (includes no excess though). Any ideas why? He's a male lab, chocolate, 3 months, live in a village....

Insurance premia increase with every provider so M & S are not unique.  No excess policies cost more, most insurance policies are post code based as well.

I've seen quite a few postings about this related to M&S but my dog's premiums go up every year

Well, I haven't changed my post code and there is a £50 excess! I wouldn't have minded so much if there was no excess. Fair enough if you claim I would expect an increase, but if you don't, I don't see why it should increase by so much. Oh well, that's the way it goes I suppose  Neutral

I just called M&S to ask some questions.

I asked what factors contribute to my premium being quite high. They said young dogs can cost more to insure as they are more accident prone and less well trained. (well, you get untrained mature dogs too).

Male dogs more costly to insure than females due to beign more territorial and getting into fights more (their words not mine - ridiculous).

Area is taken into account, mainly due to differences in prices vets charge in different areas. Fair enough.

(and lastly I opted to pay no excess, although this only added on a pound or two in my case)

They said the price changes in policies at renewal time are not automatic, and are decided by the underwiter, AXA, and can be based around changes in costs in local vet charges, overall claim numbers for that particular breed, and are not based on whether individuals have claimed in the past or not.
