Hello, I'm new to the site and am looking for a little help in choosing a dog, so I hope someone can offer a little advice about breed.
I have a couple of specific requirements that obviously influence my choices so I'll explain a bit first. My husband is disabled through having MS and although he can still work, he is most often in a wheelchair, so number 1 - doggie must be smart enough to keep out of the way and very patient.
We live in an apartment in the beautiful city of Malmö, plenty of lovely parks and places to walk, so number 2, doggie must be a medium size as it isn't a huge apartment.
Number 3, is there such a thing as a dog that casts very little hair? I've had crossbreed dogs all my adult life and though I love them to pieces I find the continual avalanche of fur depressing!
We would love to have a companion. Thanks to anyone who has read so far and can help point me in the right direction.

Id advise against getting a puppy..
What about a greyhound?? lots of rescues need homes, they like as little or as much exercise as you want.. very intelligent and loyal......
Why did i get a collie cross again?? :D

I'd agree with a greyhound/lurcher type doggie. A couple of short sprints a day and they're happy - the rest of the time they tend to appear stuffed.

Thank you both for your replies :) My last, wonderful dog was a lurcher cross and I still miss her so much after 6 years. My concern about a greyhound would simply be the size though I would love to re home an ex racer. I don't think a wheelchair and a greyhound would fit into our apartment, sadly.

what about a CKCS? they are small, friendly adaptable little dogs. Happy with a 10 min race around the block or a three mile hike in the woods

i would say a lurcher or whippet too. just because a dog is large it doesnt need much indoor space- at times i have had 3 giant breeds plus a large breed in my normal sized house & freinds are amazed how quiet they are- you often dont see them inside. as long as they have plenty of mental & physical exercise outside.
i find little dogs tend to be on the go more- definately steer clear of terrier types.

Miniature poodle. Non-shedding, agile enough to keep out of the way of a wheelchair, small enough not to take up a lot of space, very trainable ...

I really appreciate all the advice guys :) We quite like the idea of a type of spaniel, cocker or CKC perhaps. For now though your opinions are very welcome.

A Cirneco Del Etna, they are whippet sized and have a lovely short coat that hardly sheds at all. They can be as lazy as you want them to be or as active. They are very intelligent and quick to learn, and are loyal and loving.
