I don't think that they were registered with the KC in 1997 definitely not the UK one, I still actualy don't think they are a registered breed over here yet. There is a breed club in the UK though so they should be able to help.

No they are not recognised by the UK KC, I think it may be the American one where they were accepted in 1997. Here's one of the Club's website in the UK www.alaskankleekai.co.uk.

Sorry if this seems like an obvious suggestion, but why not go to the breeder you got your existing dog from?

(my intrest in huskys was a fair while ago i wanted a wolf? typical me and huskys look the closest)

I did read up on them some time ago although I don't think I would want one, it was interesting to read how a new breed started - does sound like a completely accidental mating that started it. I do have a problem with the original breeders philosophy of ' breed the best, cull the rest'. Breed the best I can cope with, neuter/spay the rest also but not cull - but then again maybe that is common in breeding and I am just naive - I don't know much about it.

The history I have read is here http://alaskankleekai.com/spurlin/history.htm - it is from an American site although I am sure I have seen a British site too - will have a look for it.

I think it was probably the same site as Briarlow has linked to above - there is a contact page on that site with phone number etc so maybe that person can help.

How were they able to tell at a few days old whether they'd be suitable or not? It's hard enough to tell a pedigree at 3 or so days old, or do they cull them much later?

Sorry I couldn't do it myself.

unfortunately the philosophy of breed the best cull the rest is apparent in most breeding

is it ?? certainly not in my breed.

I'd like to think this isn't common in any breed :(

I have read that Siberian Husky racing kennels can be very ruthless in culling dogs that are not going to make the grade, and no it is not done at a few days old. I have never heard about it happening in the UK, more in countries where they take the racing very seriously. It is one reason why I could never support Husky racing any more than I could greyhound racing, after all greyhounds are culled quite regularly when they are past their best or not up to scratch and as with Huskies it is not always done by a vet - too expensive. I believe it also happens in Dalmation breeding (if they aren't spotted) , Boxers (the white ones) and goodness knows in what other breeds that I've not heard of. I would love to think that it doesn't go on - but Human nature being what it is....... :(

When the breeders I know talk about culling, it means simply to remove them from their breeding programme - and probably sell them as pets without papers because they don't want them bred or shown.

Someone has asked a similar question on this website and the numbers of two breeders in the UK were given. (halfway down the page.)

I hope you are right, however in a lot of breeds cull means kill. Many vets won't euthanise healthy puppies and so some breeders do it for themselves. I cannot say for sure about the Alaskan Klee Kai, but if you read the history the original breeder herself calls her slection methods 'hard core' and says her brother in law's family couldn't accept it - I can't think they would have felt so strongly about spaying & neutering but I may be wrong.

I am really pleased to hear that, and I'm sure as there are so few breeders it is a lot easier to ensure that people do as they are supposed to.

Anyway, enough of that horrible subject, I was just wondering having a gorgeous Husky myself (although Siberian not Alaskan) - do they do the woo wooing to greet you (or tell you off ;D) like Sibes do?
Nanook is absolutely beautiful, do you have any more pictures - I would love to see him next to one of your other dogs just to get an idea of size. Good luck with finding another :)

I have heard about this breed, and they are quite cute, but I think I'll stick to the big ones myself!

Hi,

We also have a male Alaskan Klee Kai and he is the spitting image of your dog. We have also been looking for a bitch but with no luck. I was just wondering whether you managed to finally get a female. Your dog looks so much like ours, I wonder if they are related. We got Maximus in July 2007 from a lady in Nuneaton, could they be brothers? If you did manage to get a female, I would really appreciate it if you could let us know where from.

Thanks

Rita

Carl Winfrow ( Delark) who also breeds BSD - used to breed Klee klei -I believe she gave up because of temperament problems in the breed but you could contact her as she may know of other breeders with litters due or available

here's her website
