Dogfighting Football Star Jailed

Updated:17:29, Monday December 10, 2007

A disgraced American football star who admitted helping to kill animals in an illegal dogfighting racket has been jailed for nearly two years.

Poorly performing dogs at the Bad Newz Kennels were shot, drowned, hanged, electrocuted or beaten to death.

Michael Vick ran dogfighting ring

Former NFL quarterback Michael Vick ran the fight ring at his home in Virginia for six years.
Dressed in a black-and-white prison uniform, Vick stood in court and said softly: "I would like to apologize to the court, to my family, to my kids, for what I have done."
District judge Henry Hudson handed down the 23-month sentence after hearing he voluntarily began his sentence three weeks ago.

The former Atlanta Falcons star, once one of the National Football League's top players, had admitted to being involved in the killing of at least eight dogs, and said he knew that dogs that did not perform well were destroyed.
Two of Vick's co-defendants pleaded guilty before Vick, and had agreed to testify against the former star.
They were sentenced to 18 months and 21 months in prison.
Michael Vick in action for the Atlanta Falcons

Vick was named in the end-of-season team of the year three times and was the highest-rated college player in 2001.
He had signed a $130m (£66.7m) contract with the Falcons. The team has now launched a legal action against him to recover some of that money.
After pleading guilty, Vick specifically apologized to the NFL commissioner, the Falcons owner, his teammates and fans.
Vick, who has lost lucrative endorsement contracts with companies like Nike Inc, has recently been in financial trouble, according to court documents.

What is missing from people's lives that makes them be so cruel? Seems like this bloke had everything, yet he was still involved in this disgusting business

That jumped out at me too.
Hopefully all the publicity will make people think twice about this kind of "sport". Now if only we could get the people who run the greyhound tracks to account for themselves...
